On behalf of the Local Organizing Committee (LOC), It is my pleasure to welcome you all to Bangkok, Thailand for the 1st COSPAR Symposium. It is a privilege for the Geo-Informatics and Space Technology Development Agency (GISTDA) and the National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) to have the opportunity to host the first of a new series of COSPAR Symposium themed “Planetary Systems of our Sun and other Stars, and the Future of Space Astronomy”, in Bangkok, Thailand. The COSPAR Symposium is a bi-annual event dedicated to space and astronomical research, aiming at strengthening activities in this area not only at a regional level but also across the globe, through multidisciplinary and training sessions. We strongly believe that the 1st COSPAR Symposium in Bangkok in the year 2013 will be beneficial to all participants with valuable perspectives and experiences on space and astronomical aspects. We are delighted and ready to facilitate and offer our hospitality to all participants and look forward to welcoming you all to our exciting city of Bangkok and wish you a pleasant time and enjoyable experience during your stay in Thailand.
On behalf of the Scientific Program Committee (SPC), I would like to welcome space scientists and astronomers from all over the world to participate in the 1st COSPAR Symposium which will be held in Bangkok on 11-15 November 2013. We are proud to host the first event of this new series initiated by COSPAR which is entitled “Planetary Systems of our Sun and other Stars, and the Future of Space Astronomy.” This Symposium will consist of keynote and plenary lectures, solicited and contributed papers, and posters. The scientific program includes seven sessions and a concurrent training program, and many interesting topics and current issues in space science and astronomy will be addressed by renowned scientists and astronomers during these events. Outreach lectures will also be organized to promote awareness of space science and astronomy in the public. Between 500 and 1000 participants from the region and farther afield are expected.
During the past decade Thailand has vigorously pursued the development of space science and astronomy. In 2015 all South-East Asian countries will join together in the “ASEAN Community” which I hope will encourage even greater cooperation among member countries in promoting fields of specialization related to space and astronomy. I believe that the COSPAR Symposium will contribute to these objectives by promoting enhanced collaboration and development within the space science and astronomy community, particularly within Asia.
I welcome all participants and wish them a fruitful and interesting 1st COSPAR Symposium.
With this first Symposium COSPAR is inaugurating a new series of scientific events, and we are extremely grateful to our colleagues at GISTDA and NARIT for having offered to host this meeting in Bangkok.
Thailand is not only a magnificent venue for such an event, but the Bangkok Symposium exemplifies the ambitious tone and high standard that COSPAR wishes to imprint on this new initiative. The topic chosen for this event encompasses virtually all the disciplines of space and astronomical research. The Symposium takes place in a region where space research is becoming a priority for many emerging countries, where every year new scientific endeavors are undertaken, delivering exciting new results and opening promising perspectives to the international space research community. That the two most recent new country members of COSPAR are South Korea and Malaysia is illustrative of the regional dynamism.
Thailand has long been an active member of our organization, and it is my pleasure to acknowledge the high professionalism and enthusiasm that GISTDA and NARIT have shown in preparing this important event. I look forward to seeing you in Bangkok in November 2013 and am confident that our first Symposium will serve the advancement of space and astronomical science and cooperation in the region and worldwide.
